What exactly is a nanny share? In a typical nanny share arrangement, two or more families collaborate to employ a nanny, effectively sharing the cost of the nanny's salary. While many nanny shares involve the nanny caring for all the children together at once and alternating between the families' homes, the schedule can be tailored to suit the specific needs and preferences of the families involved.

One of the most significant advantages of a nanny share is the opportunity to have a qualified nanny at a more affordable rate. Each family in the nanny share typically pays two thirds of the nanny's usual rate. For example, if a family would normally pay a nanny $24 per hour when hiring individually, in a nanny share scenario, each family would pay about $16 per hour, resulting in a total of $32 per hour for the nanny's services. Additionally, time and a half payment would be required for hours worked over 40 in a week.

Nannies working in a nanny share face certain challenges that can make the arrangement financially compensating. They need to respect and adhere to each family's parenting philosophies and styles. Furthermore, they must coordinate with and cater to the needs of two Children. (This is If the nanny alternates between the two families' homes), they must also maintain the tidiness (children) and follow the rules of each household. Handling children who may struggle to nap outside their own bed is another aspect that requires consideration. Additionally, communication with multiple employers on a daily basis and coordinating holidays and vacation time with two families adds complexity to the nanny's responsibilities.

However, the benefits of a nanny share are substantial. Children involved in a nanny share get the chance to interact with peers their own age, fostering the development of social skills, imaginative play, and adaptability. Since they have less exposure to multiple children like in daycare settings, they may experience fewer instances of illness and receive more individual attention from the nanny.

Having a nanny or sitter at home also reduces the need for multiple pick-ups and drop-offs, simplifying logistics for the families involved. Moreover, having a nanny/sitter in the home can be advantageous for light housekeeping duties as well.(children only)

A nanny/sitter's specialized training and skills contribute to each child's development. They can maintain the child's routine, expose them to fewer germs compared to group childcare settings, and provide personalized attention to the children they care for.
